With all of the Yahoo-Tumblr reporting still going on right now it surprises me how many writers still mistake Tumblr for a “blogging platform.”

Anyone who has spent significant time on Tumblr knows that this whole “blog” thing is a front.

Literally.

70% of a given blog’s post traffic actually happens in the Dashboard. For some blogs, that percentage is even higher.

This makes things like ranking a Tumblr blog’s popularity through site traffic fairly dubious.

It also means that the value of Tumblr isn’t just in the original posts but the amplification of ideas through reblogs and the like.

This becomes apparent when you dive into Union Metrics for Tumblr and break down any given post’s reblog tree:

If you’re into bookmarklets, you can save yourself the trouble of typing tm and bookmark the following JavaScript instead:

I love when I have awesome timehop days – and with our new Dropbox Photo integration we just launched, they’ve only gotten way better.

One year ago, I convinced Esther Park that she should take the offer to do YCombinator.

Two years ago, I backed an awesome kickstarter project.

Three years ago, Michael and I (mostly Michael) open sourced Hummingbird – an awesome real time traffic visualization. (And all of these screenshots are powered by his new company MovableInk

Four years ago, it was my first Mets game at the new Citifield.

Five years ago, my parents backyard garden was in full bloom.

Six years ago, Laura and I had one of our first dates in Central Park.

Seven years ago, I have a picture of an ex-GF – whoops!

Timehop continues to unexpectedly delight me – and its only gotten better with having the photos that never made it to Facebook or Instagram.

Oh and some other people seem to like it too!

I’ve been absolutely loving seeing this building stick out above the skyline.

Before September 11th, you could see the twin towers piercing the sky. Everyday, from the BQE on the commute to school, I saw the towers make a great skyline into a breathtaking one. For me, it’s what made NYC NYC.

I saw the freedom tower the other day from all the way out in Canarsie on the way to JFK and couldn’t help but smile and have my breath taken away.

Sunrise is a really clean iOS calendar app.

I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and it quickly won the coveted dock spot on my phone for the following reasons:

they use google maps for directions instead of apple maps.

when you enter a venue in the location field it searches for the address

ability to use natural language entry of events

when you connect your facebook account it reminds you of your friends birthdays and gives you the ability to quickly send your friend a message

This digital project by Paris-based photographer Thierry Cohen is an imaginative tale about how urban landscapes might appear if we turned out all of the lights. In a big city glowing with street lamps, store signs, car headlights, and rows of illuminated apartment buildings, it’s almost impossible to see the stars in the sky. One project review says, “Atmospheric and light pollution combine to make looking into the urban sky like looking past bright headlights while driving.”

To bring a sense of nature back into these environments, Cohen has taken a bit of a scientific approach. He travels to places free from light pollution and captures the skies that rotate on the same axis as the urban skylines. Those same skies that were at some point visible above the cities are then superimposed into the darkened cityscapes.

The result is Darkened Cities, Cohen’s project in which cold, dark, and desolate cityscapes sit below these atmospheric wonders overhead. In a sense, Cohen is bringing a forgotten nature back into these places. His darkened landscapes are a frightening visual of what it might look like if a city had to be completely shut down. His images are a reminder of the magical beauty of nature and through this project, he encourages viewers to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and to appreciate—most importantly, not take for granted—the natural world around us.
